This book would not have been possible without the support, help, and encouragement of many people over the many years it has taken to reach publication. Firstly, to Professor Chua Beng Huat and the National University of Singapore for supervising my PhD thesis and providing the backbone to this project. Parts of the book were researched and written during periods at the Department of Communication, Universitas Indonesia and at the School of Theater, Television, and Film at UCLA. These visits were facilitated by Inaya Rakhmani and Jasmine Trice respectively. Fellow Indonesian cinema scholars have assisted me greatly through the years. They include Budi Irawanto, Adrian Pasaribu, Dag Yngvesson, Novi Kurnia, Tia Pamungkas, Veronika Kusumaryati, Ekky Imanjaya, Tito Imanda, Eric Sasono, Intan Paramaditha, Levriana Yustriani, and Chris Woodrich. Thank you also to the many interviewees and informants willing to tell me their stories and opinions. At the University of Nottingham and other universities my appreciation to colleagues Gaik Cheng Khoo, Hong Guo-Juin, Sean Matthews, Joanne Lim, Stephen Pihlaja, Zaharom Nain, and Shivani Sivagurunathan. To my friends who have been part of this journey: Charlotte Setijadi, Charanpal Singh, Petra Gimbad, Matt Wade, Widya Narsi, Fizz Arshad, Sandra Manickam, Ingrid Hoofd, Sebastian Dettman, Patrick Campos, and Adam Knee. To my copy-editor Alexandra Heller-Nicholas who helped pull this book into shape. At Hong Kong University Press Eric Mok who has been a patient and thorough editor. Finally, to my parents Helen and Robert, my brother Marcus, and my sister Harriet. Thank you all.
