Looking back over the process of creating this book, I am convinced that I have not in any way fully appreciated the many, many kindnesses and much help given to me from generous hearts in the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States. I apologize for my ignorance and lack of gratitude, knowing that I remain deeply indebted to so many truly fine people. During my years of learning Chinese, research, and writing, I have benefitted enormously from the help of a great many individuals and organizations. It seems right to first mention my colleagues at Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, Tennessee), both faculty members and administrators, who have supplied much support, including allowing for two years’ leave from teaching for research in China. Financial support from Austin Peay has included two faculty professional development assignments, a research support grant, travel funds from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, a summer research fellows award, and publication funding for the final phrases of production from the College of Graduate Studies. While in China during the course of two academic years, my colleagues and friends in the Department of Music filled in and kept up for me, and for that help I am most grateful. The project has now continued through the presidencies of Dr. Sherry Hoppe, Dr. Tim Hall, Dr. Alisa White, and Dr. Michael Licari (now serving). They and the provosts, deans, and department chairs who served (and now serve) under them have provided moral and financial support and, most importantly, time to devote to my work on the history of the Chinese zheng.
