Like so many other historians, we have leaned heavily upon the expertise of numerous patient and skilled archivists, colleagues, and friends throughout the completion of this book. Our sincere thanks go out to Wayne Wilson at the LA84 Foundation in Los Angeles; to Regula Cardinaux and Nuria Puig at the International Olympic Committee Archives in Lausanne, Switzerland; and to all of the excellent and diligent archival staff at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois, the British Olympic Foundation in London, United Kingdom, and the International Association of Athletics Federation in Monaco. Also, it would never have been possible to visit these archives without the generous financial support and assistance of California State University, Fullerton. We thank Dr. Shari McMahan, former Dean of the College of Health and Human Development, for providing much needed institutional support to create the time to write this book.
We owe a debt of gratitude to many others. Our sincere thanks go out to Tina Duffus, David Martinez, Ben S. Bevan, and David J. Lunt for their help in translating numerous French, German, and Spanish language sources. It has also been to our great advantage to have sought and been given advice by numerous scholars and friends throughout the writing of this manuscript. We have leaned heavily upon the expertise of Mark Dyreson, Alison Wrynn, Toby Rider, Stephen Wenn, Ron Smith, Chad Carlson, Norrie Baker, Marcel Reinold, Emanuel Hübner, and Erik Nielson. We are also extremely grateful to have been surrounded by a team of willing and able graduate students at California State University, Fullerton. Charles Siegel, Tanya Jones, Paulina Rodriquez, and Emmanuel Macedo helped conduct research, scour through archives, and offer their own critical insights.
