Abstract
This chapter examines national cultural differences in the Hmong diaspora by focusing on funeral rituals. Diasporic Hmong in Laos and the United States have modified their cultural practices in response to varying national economic systems, policies and regulations, and mainstream social pressures, which are all part of the nation-state. The chapter analyzes how the US nation-state is more intrusive for Hmong Americans to change their funeral ceremonies to a greater extent than Hmong in Laos, unlike the case of the Hmong New Year. Ultimately, diasporic cultures are subject to the shifting power of the nation-state, which produce significant differences among diasporic Hmong in terms of ethnic traditions as well as discourses about cultural authenticity.
