Lyn Thomas was a leading member of the operational research (OR) community in the UK. He pioneered theoretical work on data mining that underpinned the development of mathematical methodology in credit scoring. This methodology is now used throughout the banking and credit industry. In 1989, with Jonathan Crook, he established the biennial conferences in credit scoring and credit control. At the 2001 conference, in his keynote presentation, he recognized that the Basel Accord on the capital requirements for banks would introduce an important and novel application of credit scoring. He did a great deal of pioneering work in this field. Lyn served as editor of the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics from 1988 to 1996.
