The risk of patients with ALL and recipients of an allogeneic HSCT developing Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia is sufficiently high to warrant guidelines for the laboratory diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the disease. In this issue, the European Conference on Infections in Leukemia (ECIL) presents its recommendations in three companion papers.

The authors were unable to find a relationship between clinical pharmacodynamic cut-offs for carbapenems for treating a patient population suffering from Pseudomonas aeruginosa ventilator-associated pneumonia despite in vitro data that suggested such a link exists.

Carriage of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and MRSA was found to be low among residents of Dutch long-term-care facilities. However, the large variation between centres warrants integrated surveillance by linking antimicrobial usage, microbiological test results, clinical background data and epidemiological data to allow regular analysis of predictors of carriage of resistant microorganisms and evaluation of the effects of interventions considered necessary.
