The Japanese Biochemical Society introduced the JB Reviewer Award in 2022 with the aim of recognizing and rewarding the invaluable contribution of referees to the Journal of Biochemistry. It is awarded annually to outstanding referees among those who reviewed manuscripts submitted to the journal during the previous calendar year. This year we are recognizing reviews submitted from January 1 to December 31, 2021. Associate Editors evaluate reviews submitted by referees based on the criteria of timeliness and quality assessment during the peer review process of each manuscript. The Editorial Board selects the winners based on this evaluation. The prize is usually awarded to up to five referees per year. However, this year we have awarded the six referees below, as Dr Kurisu and Dr Suzuki were in joint fifth place. We like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to all our referees.
