Why choose the Journal of Evolutionary Biology for your research?

The Journal of Evolutionary Biology (JEB), established in 1987, is the flagship journal of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology (ESEB). Through our Research Articles, Short Communications and Reviews, our authors advance understanding of the evolutionary process across a broad taxonomic perspective. Our large and diverse editorial board invites manuscripts from across the field of evolutionary research including, but not limited to, molecular evolution, evolutionary genetics and genomics, life histories, evolutionary ecology, development or morphology. We cover both micro- and macro-evolution and publish empirical, computational, and theoretical papers.

Our Special Issues, guest edited by field experts, bring together contemporary research with the same “bottom-up” approach that characterises ESEB congresses – a defining feature of our society and our journal is that the science should be driven by the evolution community.

Read on to learn why JEB is the perfect home for your research.

Society owned and not-for-profit

  • JEB is owned and managed by ESEB and published by Oxford University Press, a not-for-profit organisation.

  • Funds raised by publishing in JEB directly support ESEB initiatives, including conferences, student grants, research networks, EDI initiatives and more.

Modern Open Science policies and a dedicated Data Editor

At JEB, we believe that Open Data enhances the overall quality of scientific research increasing both usability and reproducibility. As such, we mandate the deposition of data underlying results in the public domain alongside the publication of manuscripts.

Our dedicated Data Editor, Sebastian Lequime, checks archives associated with all accepted manuscripts and provides straightforward advice to authors on ensuring that archives are both useful and reusable.

A choice of publication models

  • Our authors have the option to publish Open Access. Via our publisher, our authorship has access to a growing number of Read and Publish deals that cover the cost of Open Access publishing. And, we offer a 30% discount on the APC to all ESEB members. You can explore further benefits to ESEB membership and join here.

  • As an alternative to OA, authors can choose to publish for free in JEB under a hybrid subscription model and make their work available to colleagues at a large number of institutions worldwide.

Easy submission process

  • We accept initial submissions in any format. Submission to JEB is stress-free and streamlined as much as possible.

  • Throughout the submission, peer review and publication process you can contact our in-house Managing Editor with any query, at any time.

A wide range of article types

  • JEB publishes primary research as either longer Research Articles or more succinct Short Communications. In addition, we publish standard Reviews, and Target Reviews that are accompanied by a collection of commentaries to fully explore diverse facets of a specific topic in evolutionary biology.

  • Our recently launched Methods Articles provide a space for authors to publish new methodological developments specifically aimed at the evolutionary biology community, be they experimental or computational.

  • We now publish Perspective Articles as a platform for authors to present a novel viewpoint on a particular area of research. Requested by our authorship, we launched this article type to facilitate open discussion on topical issues in evolutionary biology.
