Abstract
The efficacy of amoxicillin in treatment of chronic bacterial diarrhea was studied in patients from two low socioeconomic groups among whom chronic diarrhea was endemic. Fifty-seven patients, six months to 72 years old, were treated for a four-day period. Fifty-five (96%) were asymptomatic within 72 hr, 70% within 48 hr. Stool cultures were negative in 92% from whom cultures were obtained. Two patients with septicemia due to Escherichia coli and two patients with infections due to Citrobacter were not cured. No significant side effects were seen.
