V-Cumaran Arunasalam, Filip De Corte; Supplementary protection certificates for plant protection products: the story of ‘The Ugly Duckling’. Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice 2016; 11 (11): 833-840. doi: 10.1093/jiplp/jpw134
When the eggs of Mother Duck hatched, the last little bird to crawl out of its shell is immediately perceived by its environment as alien and he suffers a great deal of verbal and physical abuse. After a winter of soul-searching, the duckling decides to throw itself at the mercy of a group of swans, the birds he admires so greatly. Instead of attacking the duckling, the other swans recognize him as one of their own. Unbeknownst to himself, the ugly duckling had transformed into a beautiful swan. The fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen tells the quintessential story of transformation for the better and is a telling metaphor for the story of the supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) for plant protection products (PPP).
