Reproductive behavior of captive Muntiacus reevesi was observed in 18 mating bouts during a 9-month study. Females presumably limit the number of mating bouts with a given male, but time between successive bouts is determined by the male. Several variables measured during bouts were similar among pairs, whereas others were significantly different. Of the 11 behaviors exhibited by males during bouts, only time allocated to the behavior termed Lick Vulva varied among males. The reproductive behavior of M. reevesi is compared to other ungulates.
