A quick search of PubMed with the search term “Foucault” reveals something rather surprising. For a man who had a lot to say about medicine and psychiatry, his name virtually never appears in major medical journals. Sure there are a few hits in philosophy, ethics, and humanities journals that deal with medical ethics. Of course, there is the odd reference to Foucault in psychiatry journals, but one would be hard pressed to find references to Foucault in major medical journals. Foucault was not a scientist, so that is expected. But even those well-founded scientific medical journals that occasionally turn to issues related to ethics, politics and medicine, or social policy and medicine do not cite Foucault. In fact, the medical journals in which his name does appear are those at the margins of medicine, mostly cultural studies journals that say something about the social sciences as they relate to medicine....
