Summary
A number of known carcinogenic compounds were tested for their effect on the hatching of the eggs of the brine shrimp (Artemia salina). The carcinogens of the 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide and of the diepoxide group, Evans' blue, and DL-ethionine exerted a pronounced inhibitory effect, whereas the nitrosamines were either inhibitors or activators, and 7,10-dimethylbenz[c]acridine was practically without effect. Possible mechanisms for the effects observed are discussed.
