Ownership of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute transferred Jan. 1 from NCI to Oxford University Press-USA, Inc., New York and Cary, N.C., under terms of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement signed by the two organizations. The name of the Journal, founded in 1940, will not change.
Oxford assumed all responsibility for printing the Journal, effective this issue, and over a period of several years will gradually assume responsibility for full intellectual oversight and quality control systems. Oxford holds copyright to the Journal's content from this issue forward.
The editor-in-chief, Barnett S. Kramer, M.D., will continue in that position and will also continue as NCI's deputy director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. Kramer said this arrangement will maintain the Journal's tradition of editorial independence and quality.
As they retire or leave for other jobs, the Journal's editorial staff will be replaced by Oxford staff. The News Section, at least initially, will be unchanged. It is produced by staff in NCI's Office of Cancer Communications, and that staff will continue to produce the News.
