The Oncology Nursing Society, during its annual meeting last month, presented its top awards to four individuals.

The ONS Public Service Award, recognizing “individuals who use their public prominence to positively impact oncology services,” was won by David Kessler, M.D., former commissioner of the U.S.F ood and Drug Adminrstration and Jeffrey Wigand, Ph.D., former executive with the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. Kessler was cited for his actions to speed approval of new drugs, and Wigand was cited for making public his views about the tobacco industry's “disregard for health and safety.”

The ONS Distinguished Researcher Award was won by Marylin Dodd, Ph.D., professor at the University of California, San Francisco. She was cited for building a program in oncology nursing research. The prize carries a $3,000 award.

Distinguished Service Award was won by Christine Miaskowski, Ph.D., professor and chair of physiological nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. She was cited as a “pivotal leader” not only in her own institution, but in the oncology nursing community as a whole.
