The president of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, received the fourth Raymond Bourgine Award for achievements in cancer research. John Mendelsohn, M.D., received the award during an international conference in Paris.
Paris Mayor Jean Tibéri made the presentatio nat the opening of the Seventh International Congresson Anti-Cancer Treatments and also presented Mendelsohn with the Gold Medal of Paris, one of the city's highest honors.
Mendelsohn was recognized for his “pioneering contributions to understanding how growth factors regulate the proliferation of cancer cells by activating receptors on the surface of the cells,” the announcement said.
Chabner Honored
The Hippie Cancer Research Center, Dayton, Ohio, and the Dayton Oncology Society presented the Kantor Family Prize for Cancer Research Excellence to Bruce A. Chabner, M.D., clinical director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Boston.

Chabner was honored for career achievements including the discovery and development of antifolate cancer drugs and the development of paclitaxel, both accomplished while he was on the staff of the National Cancer Institute.
