Patricia Ganz, M.D., has been named the first Professor of Survivorship by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and will receive a $20,000 honorarium for 1 year to support her research on quality of life in breast cancer survivors.

Ganz is the director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research at the University of California, Los Angeles, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also a professor in UCLA’s Schools of Medicine and Public Health.

Her research will focus on how chemotherapy may negatively affect breast cancer patients’ abilities to concentrate and think clearly, influencing their long-term quality of life. Her past research focused on how breast cancer survivors fare in the months and years after treatment. She found that breast cancer survivors frequently enjoy better quality of life than women who do not have cancer because the experience with the disease often compels women to redefine the priorities in their lives.
