Summary
This paper completes the series of dimethyl-substituted N,N-dimethyl-4-(4′-[pyridyl-1′-oxide]azo)anilines (J Nat Cancer Inst 37: 365–367, 1966) except for the 3,5-isomer which could not be prepared. The 2′,5′ isomer was the only one of this new group to have strong activity. The remaining isomers have an activity about of the order of p-dimethylaminoazobenzene.
Supported by Public Health Service research grant CA 2219 from the National Cancer Institute.
Chemical Abstracts' nomenclature: For N,N-dimethyl-1-4-(4′-[2′,5′-dimethylpyridyl-1′-oxide]azo) aniline read 4-[[p-(dimethylamino)phenyl]azo]-2,5-lutidine 1-oxide.
