Open access books
Open access is a relatively new concept for books publishing. At OUP we recognise the continuing importance of the monograph as a valuable form of scholarly communication, especially in the humanities and social sciences. We are committed to exploring sustainable publishing models that further our mission to support the widest possible dissemination of high quality academic research.
OUP participated in the OAPEN-UK trial from September 2013, to help build a greater understanding of the opportunities open access publishing presents to our monograph authors. As part of the study, OUP published eighteen open access books, made available under a Creative Commons licence, and compared the usage and sales of these titles to matched titles published via the normal route. We contributed all evidence gathered to the project organisers at JISC Collections, who compiled the final report (published in January 2016).
Open Access Publication Model
OUP offer an open access publishing model for monographs, which involves payment of a fee and publication of the final work under a Creative Commons licence. Interested authors should speak to the relevant editor if they would like to publish their work via this route.
