Introduction/Objective
Male sexual dysfunctions have a high prevalence in the sexually active men and they are considered as cause of sexual complains. Plants offer a significant potential for studying the male sexual response. Chili pepper has pharmacological compounds with medical interest and in the Mexican traditional medicine it is considered as an aphrodisiac. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of capsaicin, the main compound of chili pepper, on the male rat sexual behavior.
Material and Methods
We conducted sexual behavior tests in forty sexually experienced male rats, divided in four groups: Control and Capsaicin treated animals (0.1, 0.3, and 1.0 mg/kg weight of the rat). In control animals and after the administration of capsaicin, the mount latency, the intromission latency, the ejaculation latency, the post-ejaculatory interval and mounts and intromissions were evaluated. One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis comparison was applied to establish the effects of capsaicin on the analyzed variables. Bivariate U-Mann Whitney with Bonferroni correction was applied on significative variables.
