The aim of Journal of Experimental Botany (JXB) is to publish papers that advance our understanding of plant biology. Original research should provide new information on fundamental processes or mechanisms including those underpinning the improvement of plants for the sustainable production of food, fuel and renewable materials. When considering if a paper is suitable, consideration will be given to the breadth and significance of the work to the plant science community.
Areas of particular focus:
- Growth and development - integration of internal and external cues determining development and architecture; reproductive biology.
- Cell biology - molecular and vesicular trafficking; cell-to-cell communication; cytoskeleton; cell division; differentiation and death.
- Metabolism - photosynthesis; carbon uptake and assimilation; resource allocation; nutrition.
- Plant-environment interactions - global change; biotic and abiotic stress; symbioses; plant–rhizoflora interactions; mineral nutrition.
- Crop molecular genetics - trait and gene characterization; molecular analysis; metabolic processes.
Information about the types of articles published and guidance for submitting can be found here.

REVIEWERS
The Journal of Experimental Botany is indebted to the following scientists for their invaluable contribution to the peer review process.
Before accepting an invitation to review a paper for the Journal of Experimental Botany, please consider carefully whether a conflict of interest (also known as a competing interest) might arise from your doing so, and declare any such conflicts to the editorial office.
SITE ACCESS
Any Visitor can:
- access the full text of articles older than one year;
- register to receive the electronic table of contents and personalised research alerting through CiteTrack
- access themed collections of review articles (TexBot) and articles included in the "Plant Culture" section;
- browse the Archive: Abstracts are available from 1996; Full text from 1997 (pdf format).
- Purchase full site access to current articles on a 24 hour basis.
As a Subscriber you have access to all mentioned above PLUS:
- all the current year articles;
- JXB Advance Access: articles published ahead of print;
- all current Special Issue articles.
JXB Advance Access:
JXB papers are published advance access in uncorrected proof format shortly after acceptance. At this point the paper is assigned a DOI number and can be cited. This ‘Accepted Manuscript’ then goes through the production process and, when the final version is ready, is uploaded to Advance Access with the label ‘Corrected Proof’. This final version of the article replaces the uncorrected version and is identical to the printed version. All contributors of published articles will have free online access to the PDF and HTML version of their article, to which links can be created from an institutional or firm website.
SITE FEATURES
Advance Search
When searching for an article click on "Searching across Multiple Journals" and benefit from expanding your search to all or selected HW journals; search by DOI (unique Digital Object Identifier assigned to all electronic articles); limit your results and view them in two different formats.
Your Search Results indicate what full-text is accessible for free, via subscription or pay per view.
Select an article from your search and view a graphical representation of the articles citing or cited by that article. This 'Citation Map' shows you the most highly-cited articles directly related to your selected article. The map is based on the references found in the full text articles of the HighWire-hosted journals.
eToCs and CiteTrack
Register to receive by email the JXB electronic Table of Contents or notification that a new issue has just gone online. Signed in with CiteTrack to receive by email whenever new content in your selected journals is published. You determine which journals should be covered, and the alerts are sent whenever new content matches criteria based on the topics (keywords/subjects of interest), authors (individuals whose work you are following) and articles (when a paper of interest is referenced by another paper or letter) you want to track. Including content put online in PubMed. You do not need a subscription to benefit from these features, just register to receive the information.
Access to site for non-subscribers:
Non-subscribers can access current articles in JXB by purchasing 24 hours access. Please note that access will be provided from the computer from which the access was purchased and it is per article. Remember that you do not need a subscription to view full-text articles older than one year.
