Abstract
This chapter charts the relative instability of Hitchcock’s work, and status, in the early years of synchronized-sound cinema, compared with his steadier progress through the four years and nine silent films up to then. He found himself required by his studio, British International Pictures, to make short promotional items; to help patch up another director’s work; to follow the multilingual fashion of the time by shooting a film simultaneously in English and German versions; and then to switch to the role of producer in overseeing the work of new directors. Like the previous chapter, this one combines an account of newly found material with close analysis of films that were already known to survive but have never been fully scrutinized. Even after Hitchcock’s career regained stability in the middle of the decade, with a move of studio and a new commitment to the thriller format, there are two films whose original endings have been lost. These endings have not yet been found, but—as on other still-missing Hitchcock items—the book uses archival documents to add significantly to what is known about them.
