Species Account Black Skimmers are truly unique. In buoyant flight, they patrol the shallow coastal waters. Flying extremely low, they course back and forth, head down, lower mandible extended just below the surface as they trace a trail in the water, using their sense of touch to detect prey and quickly snap it up in their brightly colored beaks. They resemble a dog with its nose to the ground, tracking an interesting scent on a winding path through the woods. This unusual behavior has led to many of their colorful nicknames, such as “Shearwater,” “Sea Dog,” “Cutwater,” and “Cortaguas,” as they are known in Spanish. The birds that breed in Brazil and throughout much of the South American continent are actually two different races of Black Skimmer that nest along interior rivers instead of coastal waters. Globally, there are two other skimmer species. The Indian Skimmer ranges across Southeast Asia, and the African Skimmer is found along rivers and lakes in sub-Saharan Africa and occasionally along the banks of the Nile in Egypt.
