Abstract
This introductory chapter discusses Robert Southwell, who is best known for his poem ‘Burning Babe’. It first describes his childhood and teenage years, and notes that his exposure to Latin and English was driven by the events surrounding his induction into a core group of religious brothers, as well as the practical needs of refutation and controversy. The chapter then discusses some of Southwell's early writings and several aspects of his life, training and different agendas, also considering the approach of the Jesuits to writing, Southwell's use of poetry for religious matters and his identity as an author.
