This work was greatly enhanced by the contributions of the following people who supported me in the process of research, reflection, and writing. First of all, my family has been foundational in shaping all that I do, and they provided the encouragement and support I needed to complete Academic Profiling. My mother, Francesca Palazzolo Ochoa; brother, Enrique C. Ochoa; and niece, Elisa Ochoa-Kaup, read and commented on most chapters. Knowing that my mother, a retired public school teacher, was anticipating my biweekly updates, that my brother would review the final draft with a historian’s precision, and that my college-going niece would apply a student’s insider’s perspective kept me motivated. Meanwhile, the home space and nourishment created by Eduardo Ruiz allowed me the requisite time and energy that I needed to write. The sharing of their own schooling experiences and continual words of encouragement from Ricky Ochoa-Kaup, Julie Kaup, Jesse Henderson, and Luce Palazzolo have also been significant. Similarly, years after his death, my father’s messages still inspire me.
