Abstract
The two-part essay by ethnomusicologist and musician Panayotis League explores the music and dance traditions of Kalymnos in the contemporary diaspora context of Tarpon Springs, Florida, home to the largest and most prominent Kalymnian community outside the island. If the first essay takes a wide view of the life of these traditions in Tarpon Springs, focusing on Kalymnian music and dance as a resonant means of belonging to a wider community, the second presents a more pointed take on what these practices can tell us about the diversity of ways that Kalymnian Tarponites express their regional identity, and invites us to consider music and dance events not only as harmonious collective celebrations, but also as dynamic sites of contest, conflict, and change.
