Abstract
This chapter examines the historical and cultural impact of the University of North Carolina in the American Civil War era. From 1858 to 1868, the University of North Carolina was a struggling state college in Chapel Hill, but, despite challenges, it remained open throughout the war. Even so, the institution was forced to close its doors during the Reconstruction years due to a lack of students and state funding. Considering these events, this chapter explores the perspectives of students, faculty, and Chapel Hill community members to present a more comprehensive historical view of UNC during the Civil War. More specifically, an enhanced understanding of the university before, during, and after the war allows deeper insights into how the institution remained while many other North Carolina academies, colleges, and universities closed their doors.
