Abstract
This chapter reimagines the evolution of comics in relation to America's checkered history of racism and xenophobia. Taking Art Spiegelman's illustrations for JR's photography project The Ghosts of Ellis Island as a starting point, the chapter recognizes in Spiegelman's hybrid style and concern for the victims of US border politics, the echoes of the medium's immigrant roots and of the little-studied conflation between comics' cultural marginalization and the ethnic or racial otherness of many of its iconic practitioners. What is also often overlooked, as the chapter argues, is that while Spiegelman started out by advocating for comics as adult fare, in recent years he has written, edited, and published a wide variety of comics for children. The chapter contends that because Spiegelman's artwork obsessively transgresses lines and borders, both political and aesthetic, his role in the history of comics should be seen as that of a champion for immigrants' respect and appreciation of their own art. It emphasizes that his quieter projects paint a broader picture of how Spiegelman prognosticated in his comics a new wave of xenophobic American attitudes towards both immigrants and provocative art—two equally alien challenges to the political status quo.
