Abstract
This chapter focuses on the controversies relating to the concepts of Romantic love and courtly love. The concept of the Romantic has been more controversial because it has been argued that the term “romantic” holds so many meanings that it essentially means nothing. For the last sixty years, no one school of thought or model of thinking can accurately define or represent what has been referred to as Romantic. What has passed as romanticism in one European country has had little in common with romanticism in another, resulting in a “plurality of Romanticisms” that has led to romanticisms which are antithetical to one another. On the other hand, some scholars focus on the dramatic new development of ideas that occurred at the turn of the nineteenth century, which was revolutionary for European culture—in many respects, more so than anything that had preceded it.
