Abstract
This chapter examines the role of ecotourism and park systems in ensuring environmental justice in Latin America, and examines the role of ecotourism in earning revenues for small towns and villages. It also focuses on ecoturism’s relationship with an emerging environmental effort to expand national and private parks. The chapter specifically explores the role of ecotourism in distributing development revenues in the areas surrounding national parks and reserves in Latin America. It also explores the prevailing relationship between local communities and public protected areas to determine the role of and returns from ecotourism and park systems in the continent. Local and national leaders of Latin America have also realized that ecotourism can play a key role in environmental conservation by generating the required funds for such efforts.
