Malignancy involving the spine is an important clinical problem in oncology. Secondary malignancy of the spinal column is extremely common. In a study of 2000 patients with bony metastases, nearly 70% were found to have vertebral body metastases.1 There are >180 000 new cases of spinal metastases diagnosed in North America each year, with 20 000 clinical cases of spinal cord compression.2–4 Furthermore, the incidence and prevalence of spine metastases are expected to rise in the future.
