Abstract
This chapter analyzes the relations of power within the Egyptian polity and discusses how the need for power adds to the exploitative character of the ruling elite and its associated economic elite, against the social and economic interests of other groups in society, mainly the middle and lower classes. The chapter provides a historical narrative of the construction of the political economy of authoritarianism in Egypt from the Nasser regime until today. It demonstrates how the political economy of authoritarianism has led to a securitized neoliberal system in Egypt, which penetrates young people’s lives and adds to their volatility.
