Focus Collections

The Plant Cell publishes 2-3 focus issues per year on timely topics in plant biology. Each focus issue is organized by a group of editors and guest editors and includes research articles and invited review articles. A focus collection includes the articles from the focus issue as well as a curated set of articles on the topic published within the several months surrounding the focus issue. These collections are great for catching up on some of the hottest topics and best research in plant cell and molecular biology.

The ASPB also regularly hosts webinars with Focus Issue editors discussing their findings covered in the respective Focus Issue. Delve into the history of past webinars and find information on upcoming webinars.

Collection
October 2024: Edited by: Ralph Bock, Roberta Croce, Nancy Eckardt, J. Clark Lagarias, Sabeeha Merchant, Kevin Redding
Photosynthesis encompasses the processes by which plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria transform light energy into chemical energy and fix carbon from the atmosphere into organic compounds to support their growth and development. It is difficult to overstate the importance of photosynthesis to life on earth.
Collection
August 2024: Edited by: Nan Eckardt, Pascal Genschik, Liwen Jiang, Xin Li, Marisa Otegui, Ari Sadanandom Steven Spoel, Klaas van Wijk, Dolf Weijers
Proteolysis mediates the processing and turnover of proteins and is an essential cellular function. The post-translational control of protein stability is a central feature of cellular signaling in eukaryotes and is crucial for almost all aspects of plant biology, including vegetative growth, development, reproduction, and stress responses.
Collection
September 2023; Edited by Lucia Strader, Peter Bozhkov, and Emilio Gutierrez
This focus collection covers a broad range of biomolecular condensates, from classic membraneless organelles known since the invention of the electron microscope to novel membraneless compartments and condensates of individual phase-separated proteins.
Collection
June 2023: Mike Axtell, Andrea Barta, Xuemei Chen, Nan Eckardt, Brian Gregory, Hongwei Guo, Pablo Manavella, Blake Meyers, Becky Mosher

In this Focus Collection, we highlight many of the forms and functions of RNA in plants.
Collection
January 2023; Nan Eckardt, Sean Cutler, Tom Juenger, Amy Marshall-Colon, Michael Udvardi, Paul Verslues

This Focus Collection of The Plant Cell aims to spotlight research focusing on the biology of plant response to abiotic stresses, as well as more applied research aimed at mitigating the negative effects of climate change.
Collection
July 2022; Nancy A Eckardt, James A Birchler, Blake C Meyers

This Focus Collection of The Plant Cell celebrates the father of plant genetics, Gregor Mendel. Explore reflections of Mendel's work from top scientists, covering issues from mutants of maize to leaf development.
Collection
May 2022; Roger Innes, Dan Kliebenstein, Cris Argueso, Yangnan Gu, Libo Shan, Dorothea Tholl, and Mary Williams
This Focus Collection of The Plant Cell explores how pathogens and pests manipulate plant signaling pathways, how plants respond, and how microbe-microbe interactions influence plant health.
Collection
January 2022; Dolf Weijers, Magdalena Bezanilla, Liwen Jiang, Adrienne H.K. Roeder, and Mary Williams
This collection highlights the many fascinating facets of plant cell biology today. Today’s research tools provide extraordinary insights into cell structure and function that were unimaginable when the journal was founded in 1989, such as the ability to view cellular dynamics in real time in living cells and address questions about the roles of stochasticity and emergent properties in cell biology.
Collection
April 2021; Edited by Nancy A. Eckardt, James A. Birchler, Siobhán M. Brady, C. Robin Buell, James H. Leebens-Mack, and Blake C. Meyers
This Focus Collection highlights some of the most important recent advances in plant genomics and foreshadows further key discoveries expected in the near future.
