This book draws on our own research and investigations with colleagues, past and present. Some of this research was funded by government and its agencies. All of it drew on the experiences of politicians, of public and voluntary sector professionals, of community groups and of people living in Britain's rural communities. The production team at The Policy Press, especially Emily Watt and Leila Ebrahimi, brought a huge amount of enthusiasm to this project and provided us with careful and insightful guidance. We owe a debt of gratitude also to the anonymous reviewers who offered their opinions on our original proposal to The Policy Press in the summer of 2008. Hopefully they will recognise some of their content and structural contributions to this finished text. Likewise, the independent reviewer also left his mark on the project, helping us condense and distil our arguments into something more coherent and polished. We are also grateful to the colleagues whose images can now be found in several chapters. In particular, we would like to thank Neil Stephen, Mark Scott, Sue Kidd, Mark Shucksmith and Richard Yarwood. However, as with all such projects, the responsibility for any omissions or inevitable shortcomings rests entirely with the authors.
