Abstract

The author of this paper uses cluster analysis to assess the structure of public opinion on policy issues, only to discover that there is no strong pattern, that is, no well-defined ideology widely shared by the public to relate issues to each other. He finds a weak cleavage that resembles the Populism of the 1890's and is a more distinct dimension than either liberalismconservatism or internationalism-isolationism.
