arabic words and names have been transliterated into the Latin alphabet according to a simplified system based on the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES), with the exception of certain commonly accepted transliterations, such as Gamal Abdel Nasser and Naguib Mahfouz. To facilitate reading for the nonspecialist, all diacritical marks have been omitted except for the ʿayn (ʿ) and hamza (ʾ). Arabic names of authors whose writings are predominantly in French or English have not been changed (e.g., Fethi Benslama, Moustapha Safouan). For authors who published predominantly in Arabic, but who also published in French and/or English, Arabic transliteration is used in the text, but alternate spellings of their names may be found in the notes and bibliography depending on the language of publication (e.g., Yusuf Murad and Youssef Mourad, Mustafa Ziywar and Mostapha Ziwer). In the text, I use the shortened form for Ibn ʿArabi, instead of the more formal Ibn al-ʿArabī. Following the IJMES system, English capitalization rules have been applied to transliterated Arabic titles and the definite article al-is not capitalized unless it begins a sentence or endnote. All translations from Arabic and French are my own, unless otherwise noted.
