Abstract

The differential cross sections for the 12C(π, π')12C*(Jπ=2+, Ex=4.44 MeV; 0+, 7.65 MeV; 3-, 9.64 MeV) reactions are calculated with the distorted wave impulse approximation in the energy region of the πN(3, 3) resonance. Effects due to the distortion for the incident and scattered pions are taken into account in terms of the elastic scattering amplitudes, in the impact parameter representation. It is discussed how the cross sections predicted with the plane wave impulse approximation are modified by the distortion effects. The elastic scattering amplitudes with a large imaginary-part are essential to explain the diffractive patterns of the measured differential cross sections.
