About the Journal

Dear colleague,

It is a great honour to be the new Editor of Rheumatology. My appointment as Rheumatology ’s first non-British Editor, fits in the strategy of the Journal to transcend boundaries and explore new horizons, and is in line with my own career which has taken me from the Netherlands (Leiden University), to the USA (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases) and UK (Newcastle University), back to the Netherlands (Utrecht University). Having sampled a diversity of experiences in the field of rheumatology has made me appreciate the importance of a strong rheumatology community built on solid scientific foundations. Musculoskeletal diseases contribute significantly to the global burden of disease and only through (inter)national collaboration can these be tackled. Rheumatology plays an important role in this process, acting as a modern platform for information exchange for and by professionals. Its unique selling points are its international scope and the quality of papers published, always adhering to the adage ‘Science is but an image of the truth’ by the famous British 16th century scientist and philosopher Sir Francis Bacon. We are confident Rheumatology too will stand the test of time and maintain its prominent position as a leading specialty journal.

Jacob M van Laar, Professor and Chair Department of Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology, University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands

Aims and Scope

Rheumatology is an international peer reviewed academic journal publishing the highest quality scientific (basic and translational) and clinical-epidemiological papers on a wide range of paediatric and adult rheumatological and musculoskeletal conditions, including topics such as therapy, surgery, imaging and education.

Rheumatology publishes original articles, concise reports, meta-analyses, reviews, editorials, guidelines, case reports, clinical vignettes, letters and matters arising from published material. The Journal takes pride in serving the global rheumatology community, as reflected by its contents, and editorial board. Rheumatology strives to provide highest quality peer review while aiming for a rapid publication of all papers both online and in print.

Rheumatology is the official journal of the British Society for Rheumatology.
