There was a noteworthy change in the political landscape across the United States since my last editorial. The outcome of the 58th quadrennial American presidential election was the defeat of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator Tim Kaine to businessman Donald Trump and Governor Mike Pence. On January 20, 2017, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. The outcome of the election had been considered unlikely by most media forecasts. Given the nature of discourse that occurred during the primary season, this election was considered to be incomparable to any previous election in the history of U.S. politics.
