the spirit and generosity of dean Gillian Lester of Columbia Law School enabled me to finish this book. Seven research assistants across recent years also made it possible: Dina Hoffer, Caitlin Smith, Alexander Lemann, Ian MacDougall, David Pucino, Michael Chang-Frieden, and Zander Weiss. They were the best one could wish for. Two anonymous reviewers through Yale University Press corrected mistakes and saw ways to emphasize important themes with greater power. William Frucht, my editor, gave invaluable encouragement and direction along with Philip King, in production, and Glenn Perkins, my copy editor. Each of them improved the book. Daniel Robinson schooled me on military personnel and organization. Dr. Richard H. Fulmer, a psychoanalyst, taught me a great deal about the stages a person goes through in dealing with rejection.
Too many colleagues to mention gave of themselves in our weekly discussions of each other’s work. Nonetheless, three deserve special mention. Jim Liebman’s scholarship on punishment and his commentary have been vital assets. Bernard Harcourt, the leading scholar on interdisciplinary study on the faculty, made important suggestions on particulars and approaches. Most important of all, Brett Dignam, the best lawyer you will ever find in litigation work with prisoners, gave unstintingly of her own research, experience, and penetrating knowledge of prison culture. At another level, the 200 letters I have received from the incarcerated have allowed me glimpses of the inside. Their despair, mordant humor, information, courage, and insight have touched me deeply.
